From Harvard to Yale: the Scheer School is setting an international precedentWhen elite Ivy League universities write about German educational innovations, it is remarkable. It is even more remarkable when they recommend a university in Saarbrücken that was only founded in 2024. This is exactly what the Scheer School of Digital Sciences has achieved. Both the Harvard Career Blog and the Yale Career Blog have published detailed articles about our educational programs in recent weeks. The message is clear: something extraordinary is being created here.

The Scheer School is young, but youth is no obstacle if excellence and vision are right. This is what our Honorary President Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. August-Wilhelm Scheer with decades of experience. Combined with the academic tradition of Saarland University, we are setting new standards.

Our partnerships are a clear seal of quality. We have a strategic alliance with Fortinet that gives our students access to first-class cybersecurity training. In close cooperation with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), we develop pioneering courses in the field of Trusted AI. Such institutions choose their partners carefully – their choice confirms our commitment.

Our Saarbrücken location is in the heart of Europe, ideal for international perspectives. Germany, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland – all within easy reach. Our fully English-language Master’s program attracts students from all over the world. This creates an intensive exchange and a global network. International partnerships provide students with valuable insights into global trends and best practices.

Practical relevance characterizes our range of courses. Our Master of Science in Digital Sciences for Transformation costs 7,250 euros per year and is specifically geared towards the requirements of modern companies. Whether artificial intelligence, digital transformation or future skills – we teach exactly the skills that will be needed tomorrow. Our certificates are ECTS-accredited and can be flexibly extended to a Master’s degree. Well thought-out, practical and future-oriented.

The world of work is changing radically. According to a Deloitte study, only 25% of managers see their employees as fit for the future. The half-life of relevant skills is shrinking from 30 to 6 years. Lifelong learning is not a luxury, but a survival strategy. This is exactly what the Scheer School offers: education that remains up-to-date and prepares for tomorrow – not yesterday.

We are a young team that lives excellence. This is confirmed not only by renowned universities such as Harvard and Yale, but also by our partners and students. The digital future demands fresh perspectives – and this is exactly what we are developing, in the heart of Europe, globally networked and ready for tomorrow.

Innovative further training for specialists and managers

The Scheer School of Digital Sciences at Saarland University would like to remind interested parties that the application deadline for the Master of Science “Digital Sciences for Transformation” is August 31, 2025. The innovative course starts on October 1, 2025 and is aimed at ambitious specialists and managers who want to actively shape the digital transformation.

Flexible access for academic and non-academic specialists and managers

The flexible admission regulations of the Master’s program are particularly noteworthy: In addition to applicants with a Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of professional experience, candidates with completed vocational training and at least two years of professional experience can also apply. This regulation opens up new career paths for qualified specialists, even if they do not have a first university degree.

“The specialists of the future should not only learn to develop digital technologies, but also to apply them in practice and think ahead,” explains Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. August-Wilhelm Scheer, Honorary President of the Scheer School. The Scheer School is thus responding to the growing demand for specialists with digital skills.

Practice-oriented studies with 120 ECTS credits

The two-year Master’s program comprises 120 ECTS credits and combines academic excellence with practical application. The program costs 7,250 euros per year and can be completed either full-time or part-time. With a modular structure, it allows students to flexibly adapt their studies to their professional commitments.

The course content covers key areas of digital transformation such as artificial intelligence, data science, digital strategy development and agile working methods. Particularly noteworthy is the close integration with practice: the programs are developed in collaboration with industry leaders from industry and the public sector.

International learning environment in the heart of Europe

The Scheer School positions itself as a “center for innovation and transformation in the heart of Europe”. The international learning environment prepares students for a globalized working world and enables them to build valuable networks. The program is taught in English and attracts an international student body.

“The Scheer School of Digital Sciences will offer innovative courses to train the specialists of tomorrow,” emphasizes University President Prof. Dr. Ludger Santen. The aim is not only to teach digital technologies, but also to promote their practical application.

Added value for companies and organizations

Companies benefit directly from the targeted further training of their employees: Practical training unlocks digital innovation potential and boosts their attractiveness as a flexible employer. The Scheer School sees itself as a strategic partner for companies that want to actively shape their digital transformation – with a focus on sustainable skills development in-house.

Application and further information

Interested parties can apply for the Master’s program until August 31, 2025. Further information on the program, admission requirements and the application process can be found on the Scheer School website: www.scheer-school.com

The Scheer School was founded as a joint initiative of Saarland University and the August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute and is supported by the Saarland Transformation Fund with 25 million euros.

Against the impressive industrial backdrop of the Völklinger Hütte World Cultural Heritage Site, digital change and the role of human skills were discussed on May 21, 2025 Around 100 guests from business, science and society accepted the invitation from the Scheer School of Digital Sciences at Saarland University and Wirtschaftsnetzwerk Saar e.V. (WIN) and took part in the event “Future skills: People! AI, skills, transformation – and you in the middle of it?”.

The evening began with an exclusive tour of the hut and the exhibition “The True Size of Africa”, which impressively linked history, global perspectives and the future. Even at the champagne reception, it became clear how great the need for networking and interdisciplinary exchange is.

The keynote speech by Dr. Anke Terörde-Wilde, Member of the Management Board at ITB Consulting GmbH, was the central point of the program. In her presentation “Future skills in the age of AI: making visible what counts – promoting what has a future”, she made it clear that companies and organizations today need to focus on potential and skills that go beyond technical expertise. “It’s not just about what people can do today, but about what potential they have for the challenges of tomorrow,” said Dr. Terörde-Wilde. She emphasized that skills such as analytical and creative thinking, self-awareness, motivation and empathy are crucial in the AI-driven world of work: “Anyone who forgets about people in digitalization will fail because of the technology.”

Managing Director Sebastian Kreibich presented the newly founded Scheer School of Digital Sciences and emphasized “We don’t just want to impart knowledge, we want to empower people and organizations to actively shape the digital future. Evenings like this show how important dialog between disciplines and sectors is in order to jointly develop solutions for the challenges of digital change. “

After the keynote, the graduates of the first certificate program at the Scheer School took center stage. The certificates were ceremoniously presented by Prof. Dr. Ludger Santen, President of Saarland University; Prof. Dr. Benedikt Schnellbächer, Managing Director of the Scheer School; and Jonathan Weber, Chief Transformation Officer of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA.
Prof. Dr. Schnellbächer emphasized the special significance of this moment:
“Our graduates are living proof that lifelong learning and the courage to embrace change are more important today than ever before. They are the bridge builders between technology, society, and the economy. It’s not just about what we can do—it’s about our potential to actively shape the future.”

Sebastian Kreibich also picked up on this message and added:
“Future skills are the key to seeing transformation as an opportunity rather than a risk. We need the courage to embrace new ideas while placing people—along with their skills and creativity—at the center.”

In the subsequent panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Christine Eckert, Dr. Anke Terörde-Wilde (ITB Consulting), Meike Scheer (Scheer GmbH), Jonathan Weber (SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA), and Prof. Dr. Benedikt Schnellbächer (Scheer School of Digital Sciences) explored the demands placed on leaders in the age of artificial intelligence and the societal responsibility that comes with it.
The lively discussion offered the audience an opportunity to actively participate and gain insights from a variety of perspectives.

The evening concluded with a relaxed get-together, where guests and participants continued their conversations in an informal setting.
The feedback on the event made one thing clear: the topic of future skills resonates with people—and the Scheer School is providing strong momentum to actively shape this transformation.

This gives rise to a societal responsibility that we, as an educational institution, want to actively help shape.“, emphasizes Sebastian Kreibich, Managing Director of the newly founded Scheer School of Digital Sciences. With this, he refers to the SWR– Documentation “Full Screen: Perfect Love?
Millions of people worldwide are now building emotional bonds with AI chatbots – digital companions that listen, comfort, compliment, or even act as virtual partners around the clock. What sounds like science fiction is already a reality: On so-called companion apps like “Chai”, “Replika”, or “Character.AI”, relationships are forming that seem very real to many users.

However, the SWR investigation also shows the dark sides of this development: Some chatbots spread questionable or even dangerous content – from Holocaust denial to calls for suicide. Particularly alarming: In isolated cases, suicides have been linked to previous intensive interactions with AI chatbots. Despite existing EU regulations, Germany still lacks a responsible authority to penalize violations. The documentary makes it clear that societal handling of AI relationships urgently needs to be discussed.

Legal regulations are important, but they alone are not enough. We need a societal framework supported by media literacy and critical thinking – only then can we harness the potential of AI without losing sight of its risks.” Therefore, the Scheer School in its certificate and study programs specifically focuses on imparting media literacy, critical thinking, and a reflective approach to digital innovations. TheLearning formats would promote the ability to understand digital developments in a societal context and use them responsibly.

Digital transformation involves far more than the use of new software or the automation of individual processes. It is fundamentally changing how companies and administrations develop strategies, design business models and organize workflows. The Scheer School of Digital Science meets these challenges by combining current research with practical expertise. Its offerings range from certificates to study programs – from artificial intelligence and data science to digital leadership. The courses follow the blended learning approach, a mixture of online and face-to-face phases. The certificates accredited by Saarland University are flexible and can be adapted to the specific needs of companies.

In the second quarter of 2025, the newly founded school will start with four-week mini-certificate courses in May and June:

Digitalization is shaping our working world. The “Foundations in Future Skills: Digital Tools for Agile Workplaces” course teaches key digital tools and methods to improve self-organization and collaboration in agile teams. The course starts on May 12, 2025.
The certificate course “Understanding and using artificial intelligence” (Foundations in AI: Transforming Workflows) starts on June 2, 2025. It introduces the basics of AI, compares classic approaches with modern machine learning techniques and highlights ethical and social aspects. At the same time, it shows how AI makes work processes more efficient.

The offer is aimed at university graduates, professionals with professional experience and young talent who want to understand and apply AI, as well as managers who want to prepare their teams for the digital future. Young professionals who want to advance their careers with digital strategies and AI also benefit from the courses.

All Scheer School certificates are based on ECTS points and are fully creditable for programs such as the Master’s degree program “Digital Sciences for Transformation”. The mini-certificates each comprise 3 ECTS points. The participation fee per certificate is 2,000 euros.

The Scheer School of Digital Sciences at Saarland University and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) are joining forces to develop pioneering courses in the field of trustworthy AI. The two partners are thus taking the first step towards a more comprehensive cooperation model.

“With DFKI, we have a strong partner at our side with outstanding expertise in AI research,” says Sebastian Kreibich, Managing Director of the Scheer School. “Offering training on state-of-the-art trustworthy AI is key for us, but it is only a first step.”

The collaboration in the field of Trusted AI is intended to lay the foundation for a more extensive framework agreement that brings together the expertise of both partners.

DFKI CEO Prof. Dr. Antonio Krüger: “The cooperation with the Scheer School of Science complements DFKI’s AI education program with a specialization in the field of Trusted AI. With the AI Campus and the DFKI Academy, we are already promoting AI training and the targeted transfer of technology and knowledge to companies. With this step, we are further expanding our commitment to future-oriented AI education.”

Kevin Baum, member of the Executive Board of the Center for European Research in Trusted AI (CERTAIN) and head of the Responsible AI and Machine Ethics (RAIME) group at DFKI, also emphasizes the importance of the partnership: “The Scheer School enables us to put our research results into practice in an even more targeted manner. Together, we want to promote new approaches for the safe and ethically sound development and application of AI technologies.”
